FLEMINGTON DIY is pleased to announce its 2018 Fall Jazz Series with shows in September, October, November and December featuring world-class jazz musicians.
September 29 | Miki Yamanaka Trio – TICKETS
The first Fall show, scheduled for September 29, will be a trio featuring pianist, Miki Yamanaka, with Desmond White on bass and Kush Abadey on drums. This will be a CD release show for Miki Yamanaka’s new record, “Miki”. Miki Yamanaka is a New York-based pianist from Kobe, Japan. She moved to New York City in 2012 and has studied piano with Jason Lindner, Jeb Patton, and Fred Hersch, and organ with Sam Yahel and Larry Goldings. In 2015 she was one of three pianists selected to participate in “Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead”, an intensive composition residency at the Kennedy Center. She recently earned her Master of Music degree from Queens College, receiving the Sir Roland Hanna Award. She has been known as one of the busiest pianists in her generation. Miki has appeared in concert with many notable musicians including Steve Nelson, Seamus Blake, Jerry Dodgion, Victor Lewis, Rich Perry, Antonio Hart and Peter Bernstein. Miki recorded a mini album called “Songs Without Lyrics” in 2012, and has recently recorded a brand new album, “Miki” with Steve Nelson, Orlando le Fleming, and Bill Stewart in 2017, which will be released by Canadian label, “Cellar Live”. The release of “Miki” will be celebrated at the September 29 event at FLEMINGTON DIY.
October 13 | Sasha Berliner Quartet – TICKETS
The second show on October 13 will feature the Sasha Berliner Vibes Quartet with Ben Tiberio on bass, Mareike Wiening on drums, and Prawit Siriwat on guitar. Sasha Berliner is a musician, composer, producer, and band leader from San Francisco, CA. Sasha is currently living in New York City, attending The New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music. She is a student of vibraphonists Stefon Harris and Chris Dingman as well as pianist Vijay Iyer. Sasha has performed at venues such as the Fox Theater, The Jazz Gallery, Treasure Island Music Festival, Davies Symphony Hall, the Jazz Education Network Conference, the SF Jazz Miner Auditorium, and the Next Generation Monterey Jazz Festival. According to Seton Hawkins of Hot House Jazz Magazine,”As a versatile drummer and gifted vibraphone player, Sasha wields a technique and musical sense that portends a thrilling career. In her original music, she deserves significant praise.”
November 3 | Pedro Giraudo Quartet – TICKETS
The third show in the series on November 3 will spotlight the Pedro Giraudo Tango Quartet. Originally from Córdoba Argentina, Pedro Giraudo moved to New York City in 1996. Since then he has become a highly versatile bassist, composer and arranger, performing in a wide variety of musical projects, both his own award-winning ensembles and as a member of several prominent ensembles, ranging from tango to jazz. After two decades performing with the most important interpreters of tango in the United States, The Pedro Giraudo Tango Quartet features some of the finest tango musicians of today to interpret tangos ranging from the great traditional, classic tangos, to more modern tangos and original compositions. Pedro Giraudo has participated in numerous jazz and music festivals throughout the North America, Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean and Asia, and performed in venues such as The Blue Note (Japan & USA), Birdland (Austria), London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall, Jazz Festival Royale in Thailand, Kennedy Center (Washington DC), Iridium, Jazz Standard, Blue Note, Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall (NYC). On November 3, he will bring his Tango Quarter to FLEMINGTON DIY.
December 8 | Olli Soikkeli Duo – TICKETS
The final show in the 2018 Fall Jazz Series take place on December 8th and feature Olli Soikkeli and Cesar Garabini. Finnish guitar sensation Olli Soikkeli wows audiences with his dazzling Django-style technique. Olli is now based in New York City. He was introduced to the music of Django Reinhardt at the age of 12, and Gypsy jazz has been Olli’s passion ever since. Despite his young age he has played with stars such as Bucky Pizzarelli, Andreas Oberg, Tommy Emmanuel, Marian Petrescu among others; as well as touring with Rhythm Future Quartet, led by Jason Annick. Olli will be joined by Cesar Casten-Garabini, the great Brazilian seven-string guitar artist, also based in NYC. Gypsy meets choro! Brazilian chorinho and Gypsy jazz are a natural pair. Both matured in the early 20th century influenced by urbanization, industrialization, European classical music, African rhythms, popular dance music, and the dawn of the recording industry.
