Scared You, Didn’t I?

Storytelling Fundraiser | Saturday, October 28, 7pm at Stangl Factory

Scared You Didn’t I?, hosted by professional storyteller and playwright Michaela Murphy, will feature an evening of real people telling real stories that just might scare you silly. This Halloween themed performance features Murphy, Mike Albo, David Lee White, Joey Novick, and Tracy Rowland.

The performers have been featured in popular storytelling shows like The Moth, Word of Mouth, R!SK, Story Collider, First Person Arts, and many more. 

All proceeds from this event go to support Flemington DIY’s mission to provide an inclusive art space that engages the community, inspires social change, and invigorates the economic development of Flemington. Stangl Factory is located at 50 Stangl Road in Flemington, NJ, and is BYOB.

  • $100 for a ticket at a table
  • $50 a ticket in general seating
  • $25 rush tickets will be available one hour prior to the event

The Storytellers

Michaela Murphy is a writer, playwright, storyteller, and teacher. Her one-woman show, Something Blue was performed at The Aspen Comedy Festival, The Improv Theater (Los Angeles), and Off-Broadway (Second Stage Theater). Her stories have been featured on NPR, The Moth Mainstage (NYC and National Tours) and Peabody Award winning “The Moth Radio Hour,” The Nantucket Film Festival, The Whitney Museum (NYC), On the Boards (Seattle), Seattle Repertory Theater (Seattle),The Liar Show, RISK!, Word of Mouth (Bucks County Playhouse),TEDx, the Clinton White House and in The New Yorker. She is formerly the Director of Education at Second Stage Theater and was guest Artistic Director for The 52nd Street Project replications (Navajo and Chippewa Nations, Yale University, and See-Hear Theater in London, UK). Michaela is a Co-Founder of “L!FE: Leadership Fueled by Entrepreneur–ism” (Detroit, NYC) an education leadership platform for High School students and was Director of the Entrepreneurs-in-Training program at Barnard College. She is currently Director of Education at Bucks County Playhouse.

Tracy Rowland is a 3-time Moth StorySLAM champion, plus a producer and host of The Story Collider and The Liar Show, two long-running NYC storytelling institutions. She works days as a writer and video editor, where her promos and shorts have appeared on NBC, Cartoon Network, and Al Jazeera America. Tracy recently won a second local Emmy, but her mom still thinks they’re the regular kind.

Joey Novick has been a political comedian, camp counselor, editorial director, attorney, busboy, radio show host, professional speaker, child actor and an elected official in New Jersey – but not necessarily in that order. Joey’s unique background: He’s a professional stand-up comedian with appearances on MTV, Comedy Central and Rascals Comedy Hour. Joey has appeared at hundreds of comedy clubs across the US and Canada, and opened in concert at comedy clubs for comedy legends Jerry Seinfeld, Robert Klein,  Adam Sandler, Lewis Black, and Paul Reiser and many comedians much more famous than he is. Joey’s solo show, “COMEDIAN ELECTED TO TOWN COUNCIL IN NEW JERSEY” was a featured part of the Jersey Fringe Festival, and nominated for Best Comedy Performance at the Capital Fringe Festival in Washington, DC.  BroadwayWorld.com noted that “Novick’s humor is in the style of Jay Leno and David Letterman. It’s edgy without being offensive…Comedian Elected to Town Council in New Jersey has heart.” He has appeared as a storyteller on The Liar Show, Yum’s the Word, Twice Told Tales, and Sideshow Goshko.

Mike Albo is a writer, performer and humorist. His solo shows include “Spermhood: Diary of a Donor” and “The Junket,” both directed by David Schweizer. The Junket ran off Broadway at the Lynn Redgrave Theater in 2014. HIs most recent novel is Another Dimension of Us (Penguin Workshop). He is also the author of the novels Hornito (HarperCollins) and The Underminer (Bloomsbury, co-written with Virginia Heffernan) as well as the e-books Spermhood and The Junket. His solo shows include “Spermhood: Diary of a Donor” and “The Junket,” both directed by David Schweizer. The Junket ran off Broadway at the Lynn Redgrave Theater in 2014. David Lee White is a New Jersey based playwright, performer and educator who has worked with Passage Theatre, McCarter Theatre, Vivid Stage, PlayPenn, the Bucks County Playhouse and many other institutions in the NJ/NY/PA area. His work runs the gamut from comedy, verbatim theatre, musical theatre and educational theatre. In 2016, David was commissioned by the New Jersey Performing Arts Center to create the play Fixed which premiered at Passage Theatre in March, 2017. His play Blood: A Comedy was seen at Passage Theatre (2009) and Vivid Stage (2012). His play Slippery as Sin (available from Next Stage Press) also received its world premiere at Passage in 2011. Ways to be Happy (also available from Next Stage Press) made its debut as an audio play from Vivid Stage in 2020. He has performed his solo show, Panther Hollow, at multiple venues including Off-Broadway at The United Solo Festival, Arcade Comedy Theatre in Pittsburgh, Point Park College, Stockton College and Drexel University. David has created three shows with composer Kate Brennan – AliEN8 (available through YouthPLAYS), Clean Slate and Illuminate.
