Artist Statement:

I tend to work in series, by which I mean that I start with a concept and then work multiple variations on it and see where it takes me. Take a premise and go as far I can with it.

Recently I decided to return to abstraction after some years of representational work. I found myself relying on spontaneity, improvisation, and accident. It felt uncontrolled, undisciplined, and chaotic; I was waiting for something to happen that didn’t happen.

So I decided to go for something more controlled and systematic. I decided to work with a limited number of repeating shapes on a white background, changing only the colors used and the arrangement of the shapes. I wanted to create a new vocabulary and see what came of it.

More generally, and I think this can be said for all artistic endeavors, this new series is an attempt to absorb my experience of this particular moment and then respond to it. In the earlier work I felt I was mirroring chaos and uncertainty. In this new series I wanted to create something more contained and harmonious.
