Ever wanted to share a joke with your friends? Have a friend who you think is hilarious but don’t know how to let other ladies know about her talent? Here’s an opportunity to give it a try. Enjoy a safe space to share laughs – and if you fail – it’s ok to get up and try again!
1) Why did I start the Women’s Comedy Open Mic?
I was a theater kid and have always loved making people laugh. In my day job I try to bring humor to healthcare regulation so that people can understand it better. In 2023 I decided to take a standup comedy class in NYC and LOVED it. The problem was, how do I continue to build the skill? There are some open mics in the area, but they are typically late at night and tough for me to get to as a mom. Plus, I was tired of frequently being the only female in the room and not knowing if the jokes were funny or the guys just didn’t get it. From there, the Women’s Comedy Open Mic was born.
2) Is it only for Women?
NO! It is for anyone who wants to try comedy and doesn’t know if their voice will be accepted. I’ve been to open mics where I walked out as soon as I walked in because of the way I was treated when I entered. My goal at this mic is to change that. I’ve heard frequently from those who attend that it’s one of few open mics where they feel supported and know it’s ok if the joke fails. That’s the point. I have men that come to be in the audience and I always open it up for anyone to try after those who have signed up. My dad has gone up – and the women are very supportive. Perhaps I should rename the Mic, but for now, it is what it is.
3) What can I share jokes about?
We use adult language and I always say nothing is off limits. As a boy mom I share a lot of potty humor. While I don’t censor comedians, I do ask at the beginning of every open mic that we remember not to be hateful or racist. The goal is an inclusive Mic, and you can be funny without hurting others.
